Samsung cuts price of Galaxy Tab 2

 Samsung seems to be on a price cutting spree. The company has cut the price of both the versions of its Galaxy Tab 2 in India. Galaxy Tab 2 P3110, which was launched in India earlier this month at Rs 13,900, now costs Rs 12,750 officially and comes with a free Bluetooth headset. Samsung has also reduced the price of Galaxy Tab 2 P3100 to Rs 16,499 from Rs 19,500. 

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 P3100 comes with a 7-inch PLS touchscreen with 1024x600p resolution and approximately 170ppi pixel density. The device ships with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) layered with TouchWiz UI out-of-the-box and is upgradeable to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). It is powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor coupled with 1GB RAM and comes with 16GB onboard memory, with microSD support up to 32GB. 

The Galaxy Tab 2 P3100 sports a 3.15MP camera on the back, while a VGA unit is located in front. Connectivity suite of the device consists of 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and microUSB 2.0. This device is powered by a 4,000mAh battery that offers up to 30 hours of talk time over 2G network. 

Galaxy Tab 2 P3110 shares all the hardware specifications with the P3100 model, but does not support 3G internet access. The other difference is that it is powered by Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) out-of-the-box. 

Earlier in February, Samsung slashed the prices of its two flagship smartphones - Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III. This was followed by a price cut of Galaxy Camera, launched in the country just two months ago.

Transparent 3D computer unveiled

A transparent computer that allows users to reach inside and touch digital content has been unveiled at the Technology, Education and Design (TED) conference in Los Angeles.

TED fellow Jinha Lee has been working on the SpaceTop 3D desktop in collaboration with Microsoft.

Allowing people to interact with machines in the same way they do with solid objects could make computing much more intuitive, he told the BBC.

He can see the system coming into general use within a decade.

The system consists of a transparent LED display with built-in cameras, which track the user's gestures and eye movements.

The design was inspired by what he sees as a human need to interact with things.

"Spatial memory, where the body intuitively remembers where things are, is a very human skill," he said.

Translating this to the digital world will enable people to use computers more easily as well as complete more complex tasks.

"If you are working on a document you can pick it up and flip through it like a book," he said.

For more precise tasks, where hand gestures are not accurate, there is a touchpad. It will allow, for example architects to manipulate 3D models.

Facebook CEO wants school kids to learn coding

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates,Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter creator Jack Dorsey are among the tech luminaries appearing in a new video promoting the teaching and learning of computer coding in schools.


Titled "What most schools don't teach," the video released online begins with Zuckerberg, Gates and other tech icons recalling the time they got their start in coding. For some, that was in sixth grade. For others, such as Ruchi Sanghvi,Facebook's first female engineer, that happened in college. Freshman year, first semester, intro to computer science, to be exact. 

Dorsey, who also founded and runs the mobile payments startup Square, said in an interview that he didn't grow up being a programmer. 

"I wanted to work on ideas. In order to see them grow, I had to learn how to code," Dorsey told The Associated Press. "I think there is a lack of desire, there is a lack of push to teach people how to program and how to code. It's not all that dissimilar to learning a foreign language. It's just a way to instruct a machine on what to do. It empowers people to start a business, to start a project, to really speak to a daily issue that they are having or other people are having." 

Running less than six minutes, the video promotes Code.org, a nonprofit foundation created last year to help computer programming education grow. 

"The first time I actually had something come up and say `hello world,' and I made a computer do that, that was just astonishing," Gabe Newell, president of video game studio Valve, recalls in the video. 

But it's not just tech leaders promoting programming in the video. Chris Bosh, of the Miami Heat basketball team, says about coding: "I know it can be intimidating, a lot of things are intimidating, but, you know, what isn't?" 

Code.org was founded by tech entrepreneur Hadi Partovi, an early investor in Facebook, Dropbox and the vacation rental site Airbnb. The nonprofit wants to address an oft-cited problem among technology companies - not enough computer science graduates to fill a growing number of programming jobs. The group laments that many schools don't even offer classes in programming. 

"Our policy is literally to hire as many talented engineers as we can find," Zuckerberg says in the video. "The whole limit of the system is just the there just aren't enough people who are trained and have these skills today."

How You Can Be Infected via Your Browser and How to Protect Yourself

In a perfect world, there would be no way for your computer to be infected via your browser. Browsers are supposed to run web pages in an untrusted sandbox, isolating them from the rest of your computer. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen.

Websites can use security holes in browsers or browser plugins to escape these sandboxes. Malicious websites will also try using social-engineering tactics to trick you.

Insecure Browser Plugins

Most people that are compromised through browsers are compromised through their browsers’ plugins. Oracle’s Java is the worst, most dangerous culprit. Apple and Facebook recently had internal computers compromised because they accessed websites containing malicious Java applets. Their Java plugins could have been completely up-to-date – it wouldn’t matter, because the latest versions of Java still contain unpatched security vulnerabilities.

To protect yourself, you should uninstall Java entirely. If you can’t because you need Java for a desktop application like Minecraft, you should at least disable the Java browser plugin to protect yourself.

Other browser plugins, particularly Adobe’s Flash player and PDF reader plugins, also regularly have to patch security vulnerabilities. Adobe has become better than Oracle at responding to these issues and patching their plugins, but it’s still common to hear about a new Flash vulnerability being exploited.

Plugins are juicy targets. Vulnerabilities in plugins can be exploited across all different browsers with the plugin across all different operating systems. A Flash plugin vulnerability could be used to exploit Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer running on Windows, Linux, or Mac.

To protect yourself from plugin vulnerabilities, follow these steps:

• Use a website like Firefox’s plugin check to see if you have any out-of-date plugins. (This website was created by Mozilla, but it also works with Chrome and other browsers.)
• Update any out-of-date plugins immediately. Keep them updated by ensuring automatic updates are enabled for each plugin you have installed.
• Uninstall plugins you don’t use. If you don’t use the Java plugin, you shouldn’t have it installed. This helps reduce your “attack surface” – the amount of software your computer has available to be exploited.
• Consider using the click-to-play plugins feature in Chrome or Firefox, which prevents plugins from running except when you specifically request them.
• Ensure you’re using an antivirus on your computer. This is the last line of defense against a “zero-day” vulnerability (a new, unpatched vulnerability) in a plugin that allows an attacker to install malicious software on your machine.

Browser Security Holes

Security vulnerabilities in web browsers themselves can also allow malicious websites to compromise your computer. Web browsers have largely cleaned up their act and security vulnerabilities in plugins are currently the main source of compromises.

However, you should keep your browser up-to-date anyway. If you’re using an old, unpatched version of Internet Explorer 6 and you visit a less-reputable website, the website could exploit security vulnerabilities in your browser to install malicious software without your permission.

Protecting yourself from browser security vulnerabilities is simple:

• Keep your web browser updated. All major browsers now check for updates automatically. Leave the auto-update feature enabled to stay protected. (Internet Explorer updates itself through Windows Update. If you use Internet Explorer, staying up-to-date on updates for Windows is extra important.)
• Ensure you’re running an antivirus on your computer. As with plugins, this is the last line of defense against a zero-day vulnerability in a browser that allows malware to get onto your computer.

Social-Engineering Tricks

Malicious web pages try to trick you into downloading and running malware. They often do this using “social engineering” – in other words, they try to compromise your system by convincing you to let them in under false pretenses, not by compromising your browser or plugins themselves.

This type of compromise isn’t just limited to your web browser – malicious email messages may also try to trick you into opening unsafe attachments or downloading unsafe files. However, many people are infected with everything from adware and obnoxious browser toolbars to viruses and Trojans via social-engineering tricks that take place in their browsers.

• ActiveX Controls: Internet Explorer uses ActiveX controls for its browser plugins. Any website can prompt you to download an ActiveX control. This can be legitimate – for example, you might need to download the Flash player ActiveX control the first time you play a Flash video online. However, ActiveX controls are just like any other software on your system and have permission to leave the web browser and access the rest of your system. A malicious website pushing a dangerous ActiveX control may say the control is necessary to access some content, but it may actually exist to infect your computer. When in doubt, don’t agree to run an ActiveX control.

• Auto-Downloading Files: A malicious website may attempt to automatically download an EXE file or another type of dangerous file onto your computer in the hopes that you will run it. If you didn’t specifically request a download and don’t know what it is, don’t download a file that automatically pops up and asks you where to save it.
• Fake Download Links: On websites with bad ad networks – or websites where pirated content is found – you’ll often see advertisements imitating download buttons. These advertisements try to trick people into downloading something they’re not looking for by masquerading as a real download link. There’s a good chance links such as this one contain malware.

• “You Need a Plugin to Watch This Video”: If you stumble across a website that says you need to install a new browser plug-in or codec to play a video, beware. You may need a new browser plugin for some things – for example, you need Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin to play videos on Netflix – but if you’re on a less-reputable website that wants you to download and run an EXE file so you can play their videos, there’s a good chance they’re trying to infect your computer with malicious software.

• “Your Computer is Infected”: You may see advertisements saying your computer is infected and insisting you need to download an EXE file to clean things up. If you do download this EXE file and run it, your computer probably will be infected.

This isn’t an exhaustive list. Malicious people are constantly on the look-out for new ways to trick people.

Microsoft launches Internet Explorer 10 browser

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 10 to millions of new users, hoping the latest version of its market-leading browser will win back customers who have migrated to Google's Chrome and help it establish a toe-hold in the fast-growing mobile browser market. 

The world's largest software maker, whose Internet Explorer browser elbowed out Netscape Navigator in the early days of the web, said IE 10 is 20 percent faster at downloading sites than its predecessor IE 9 and allows for touch-screen commands. 

The browser has been available since late October for users of Windows 8, Microsoft's new touch-friendly operating system, but now becomes available for the 700 million or so users of Windows 7. 

Microsoft is hoping PC and laptop users will like the new browser enough to consider buying Windows 8 tablets rather than Apple Inc's iPad, which does not run Internet Explorer. 

Various versions of Microsoft's venerable Internet Explorer franchise still dominate desktop browsing, with 55 per cent of the PC browser market all together. But it has in recent years lost share to Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome, which now account for 20 per cent and 17 per cent respectively, according to tech research firm NetMarketShare. 

IE 10 running on Windows 8 has got generally good reviews, and has been hailed as the best version of Internet Explorer yet, but it has not been considered decisively superior to Chrome or Firefox. 

In the smaller but faster-growing mobile browser market, Apple's Safari is the runaway leader with 61 per cent, owing to the popularity of its iPhones and iPads while Google's Android browser has 21 per cent. 

Tablets running Windows 8, including Microsoft's own Surface devices, have not sold strongly since they were launched last October, restricting IE 10's popularity so far. Only 2.3 per cent of computer users are running Windows 8, according to NetMarketShare.

Goa students to get tablets, notebooks for Rs 25

Students in Goa can now get a tablet PC or a notebook for just Rs 25.


The digital largesse is a part of the Goa government education department's initiative to familiarise Class V and VII students with computers in order to "prepare them for the life ahead and get them curious about the e-systems", according to additional director education Anil Powar. 

"General category students will have to pay only Rs.25 while SC and ST students will have to pay Rs.10 to register for the scheme," Powar told reporters here Tuesday. 

The official said that the state government was making arrangements for purchasing nearly 50,000 notebooks and tablet PCs for distribution.

"All the computers will have a special e-learning packages. After a day in class, the students will now be able to revise their tutions at home over the tablets," Powar said, adding that a provision of Rs.95 crore had already been made for the purchase of the computers in the last budget presented by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. 

All the systems will have inbuilt security systems installed to ensure that the computers are not misused for pornographic purposes and other controversial web applications, but the education department will also take an undertaking from the student's parents before handing over the computers. 

"It is a no objection certificate saying they are OK with us giving them the computers. The parents should also be in a position to both goad the students to logging onto the right websites," he said. 

The Goa government was the first state government in the country to give out free laptops to students over a decade ago.

PlusGrace, a social network for praying

Jamie Coughlin believes in the power of prayer. So much so that he's built a website called PlusGrace that lets people pledge to pray for others online or donate money electronically to those requesting prayers. The website gets a small slice of the collection plate.

"A lot of people say, man, there's so much negativity in the news, and I can't do anything about it," he says. "Well, you know the one thing you can do to be proactive and affect the outcome? Pray."

 

The for-profit business, designed and built by the 32-year-old Coughlin and his younger brother, was incorporated last November on All Souls Day and opened to the public in mid-January. It has a clean, user-friendly design and facilitates two types of faith-based campaigns: People can either ask others to pledge prayers only, or they can ask for prayers and cash. The campaigns are then featured under category headings such as "Recent" and "Random." Slogans such as "Social for the Soul" and "Pray It Forward" flash on the home page, which also features popular users and latest tweets.

To post a campaign, users simply create an account, upload a few photos, and provide a title and a short description of the cause they believe merits spiritual or monetary support. Requests for prayer and donations can be made anonymously, and, though the Coughlins are Catholic, PlusGrace is open to all faiths. Early adaptors include a New Hampshire food bank and a spiritual boot camp in Tennessee.

Pledging prayers is free, but PlusGrace charges a 2-5 % transaction fee on monetary donations. "Think of it as a Kickstarter for faith," explains Coughlin, who says the lower rate is for institutions that want to use PlusGrace in place of weekly collections or tithing. Those types of cases, he says, "obviously warrant lower transaction fees, because probably the dollars flowing through that will be higher."

Coughlin, a Princeton graduate who currently runs a New Hampshire startup incubator, says transaction fees are what makes PlusGrace possible, but he emphasises that prayer is the major focus. "The goal [is] to build the world's biggest online prayer network," he says. In many cases, he says, people "don't have dollars to contribute, and we're basically saying to the world, look, your prayers are just as important. If you don't have a dollar, you can still affect the outcome by praying. That's powerful."

Coughlin has also reached out to the Vatican to let them know about PlusGrace. It is even hosting a campaign to pray for Pope Benedict and to pray that the Church's Cardinals elect "a natural communicator, a charismatic leader and someone who can evangelise the Catholic faith throughout the world." So far, that campaign has received seven online prayers.

A Pakistani Hacker known as Hitcher has breached IndiaResults.com - No.1 Indian Portal for Boards & University Exam Results and Educational/Career.

Similar to BRBRAITT site attack, the hacker  defaced the website and published the database contents in the defacement page itself.

The database dump contains the Name, phone nunber , address and other details. There is no password leaked in the dump.

It could be that Dell is simply sponsoring the promotion, but given that it’s an “Exclusive Offer,” we can’t see where the exclusivity lies. Box is about the only cloud storage provider that gives you a ton of space for free right away. Dropbox gives you 2GB after signing up, and you can earn more with referrals, but that can take some work. Box is really the only simple cloud solution that can be considered a viable backup resource.

Here’s the catch, though. Box only allows, at the most, 250MB files, so you might as well forget about backing up home videos. However, Box offers paid accounts that get rid a lot of the limitations that you’ll come across. Plus, 50GB for free may not seem useful now, but who knows when you’ll need it. Either way, it’s handy to have just in case.

Bollywood Actress Divya Dutta website vulnerable to critical vulnerabilities

Ravi Kariya, a Security Analyst from Cyber Octet Pvt. Ltd (facebook.com/cyberoctet) has discovered critical vulnerabilities in the official website (divyadutta.co.in) of famous Indian Actress Divya Dutta.

There are two SQL Injection vulnerability in the website.  One of the vulnerabilities resides in the  Press Clips page of the site(divyadutta.co.in/pressclipdetail.asp?id=7).  A malicious hacker can exploit this vulnerability and extract the database .

The other one is more critical one , it allows hackers to bypass authentication of the Login .  A malicious hacker can login into the website as admin(divyadutta.co.in/admin/) . This can be done by injecting the crafted password that will modify the sql query such that it allows hacker to login.

There is also Cross site scripting vulnerability in the contact us page(divyadutta.co.in/contact.asp ) .  Injecting the follow code in the fields and clicking the submit button executes the injected code:

Ravi tried to contact the Divya dutta via email and Twitter but she fails to respond for his query.  It seems like that She doesn't realize the severity level of this security flaw. A BlackHat hacker is able to deface the site with these vulnerabilities.

Microsoft: Google reads all your emails

 Google reads every email that you send and receive, so claims software giant Microsoft. In its latest campaign titled 'Don't get scroogled by Gmail', the software maker says that Google reads every email a user sends and receives in order to dish out related advertisements. 

Through the campaign, Microsoft asks users to switch to its own free email service Outlook.com, which it claims "doesn't go through the content of users' emails to show ads." It also asks users to sign an online petition against Gmail to let Google know that "going through personal email messages to sell ads is unacceptable." 

On its website, Google says, "In Gmail, most of the ads we show appear next to an open email message and are related to the contents of the current email conversation or thread." Microsoft explains this with a host of examples on its website Scroogled.com. One example is Google advertising details of divorce lawyers to a woman who has emailed to her friend that she is separating from her husband. 

The maker of Windows operating system says Google has not given users the choice to not show their private emails to the company. It also highlighted that the internet search giant currently faces six class-action lawsuits because of its practice of sifting through subscribers' emails. 

Microsoft said, "We honour the privacy of our Outlook.com users, and we are concerned that Google violates that privacy every time an Outlook.com user exchanges messages with someone on Gmail. This campaign is as much about protecting Outlook.com users from Gmail as it is about making sure Gmail users know what Google's doing." 

Citing a GfK Roper study it commissioned, Microsoft states that 70% of email users in US are unaware that major email providers routinely engage in the practice of reading through their personal email to sell ads. When informed of the same, 88% of the people disapprove of this practice. 

Microsoft recently also took on Google Shopping for offering users' skewed choices.

Government approves blocking of 306 Twitter accounts

A high-level government review committee has given its stamp of approval on a decision to block 306 accounts being used on micro-blogging site Twitter in the wake of communal violence in Assam's Kokrajhar district and largescale migration of people from the South. 

These accounts, according to the review committee, had the potential to inflame communal tension in the country and some morphed pictures were uploaded that had led to clashes in some parts of the country. 

Secretary of department of electronics and information technology (DeitY) told the review committee comprising cabinet secretary Ajit Seth, telecom secretary R Chandrasekhar and legal affairs secretary B A Agarwal that he had held a meeting with representatives of Google, Twitter and Facebook and asked them to provide details of the up-loaders of "objectionable" contents. 

However, none of them provided any details, the DeitY was quoted as saying in the minutes of the meeting held recently in the Cabinet Secretariat. 

The committee was reviewing the 310 Twitter and Facebook accounts that were blocked after the communal clashes in Kokrajhar in Assam. Following these clashes, migration of Northeast residents was witnessed from Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Patna. 

The government has been alleging some mischievous elements were using the social networking sites for fomenting communal tension and had also issued an advisory asking the websites to remove the such inflammatory pictures or articles. 

"However, such inflammatory and harmful contents continued to appear on the social networking sites despite the advisory and the request made by DeitY," the meeting noted.

Google relaunches Good to Know website

 Days after The New York Times and Wall Street Journal said Chinese hackers had infiltrated its computers and hacked email accounts of its reporters, search engine giant Google said it has updated its 'Good to Know' website with the latest information on web security and threats. 

Google said its efforts are primarily aimed at helping web users stay away from malicious content and online criminals by offering tips and advices through the re-launched website. 

"Everyday we warns our users about thousands of malicious websites, but the thing is you don't have to be a computer scientist to understand these and stay safe online. The 'Good to Know' website will have recommendations, advices, and other information about the internet and it's security," said Eddie Chung, program manager at Google Security team. 

Recommendations from Google, for instance, include setting up a two-step login verification process for its email service Gmail and creating passwords made up of numbers, letters and symbols. Chung said Google invests hundreds of millions of dollars on cyber security and it constantly engages with web developers for information. Last year, the Mountain View, California-based firm had acquired internet security start-up Virustotal. 

Google's cyber-security efforts will be relevant to India, which is the world's largest source of spam according to a recent Cisco report. Google said Gmail has about 50 million users in India as of now. Google Hangouts come to Gmail

Google has integrated its free video chat suite Hangouts with Gmail. This means users in India can now chat with as many as up to nine people through their Gmail accounts. The Hangouts integration enhances Gmail users' video chat experience with a host of fun effects and business-oriented features.

To start a Hangout, users simply need to click on the video camera icon appearing on the right side of their Gtalk pane. A new window pop-ups, showing a list of their Google+ friends. Users can also add people to the video chat by adding contacts via Gmail IDs, in case they are not in their Google+ circles.

Google also gives users the option of making their chat public with Hangout On Air feature. The feature, which requires a verified YouTube account, allows users to broadcast their chats to an infinite number of web surfers on YouTube.

Once a Hangout starts, users can see the other group members at the bottom of their screens, while the video appears on top. On the left side is the window pane with a host of features like Chat, Screenshare, Google Drive, Google Docs, Effects and Ping Pong Hangouts. With Chat, Hangout members can send instant messages to each other, while Screenshare is a collaborative tool that allows members to send a screenshot of an open window on their computers to all other chat members. The integration of Google Drive and Google Docs in Hangouts in Gmail further extends the collaborative nature of the video chat.

For those who want to have fun with their friends in a Hangout, Google has integrated a game of table tennis as well as various effects like sounds, pictures etc. Users can also add apps of their choice in Hangouts from a selection provided by Google. These features allow users to watch YouTube videos together, share pictures or send out their messages to the world. With integration of Google Calendar in Hangouts, users can mark important events and set reminders to schedule a Hangout for any given day.
